    J-1 Visa Sponsor
An independent, U.S. Department of State-designated organization responsible for J-1 program administration, DS-2019 issuance, compliance monitoring, and final sponsor-stage eligibility decisions. GCB is not the Sponsor; we coordinate with the Sponsor on your behalf.
    Host Company
The U.S.-based employer - hotel, restaurant, resort, or other approved business - that provides your structured internship or training placement.
    DS-2019
The Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status. Issued by the Sponsor, it's the official document you take to the U.S. embassy to apply for your J-1 visa.
    DS-7002
The Training/Internship Placement Plan. A detailed document signed by you, the Host Company, and the Sponsor that outlines your learning objectives, rotations, and supervision during the program.
    SEVIS Fee
A mandatory $220 U.S. government fee paid to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System before your visa interview. Required for every J-1 participant.
    U.S. Visa Fee (MRV)
A $185 fee paid to the U.S. embassy or consulate when you book your J-1 visa interview appointment.
    Program Fee
The total fee for GCB's placement and coordination services plus Sponsor administration. This is separate from the Application Fee and from government fees (SEVIS, visa).
    Down Payment
A $900 upfront portion of the Program Fee, collected only after written host-offer acceptance and before sponsor processing. It is not required to interview or review offers. Refund eligibility follows the program Terms & Conditions and Payment Addendum you review and sign before paying.
    Payroll Deduction
An arrangement where the Host Company deducts an agreed monthly amount from your U.S. paychecks to pay down the remaining Program Fee balance during the program.
    Application Fee
The fee that activates your application. In hospitality and culinary fields it is $199 one-time, refundable if we can't place you within 3 months or if you decline a placement we propose, or $99/month capped at $297, non-refundable. In the other designated occupational fields, and on the Management in Training track, it is $500 one-time, refunded in full if we do not match you with a host company within 4 months.
    Placement Confirmation & Addendum
A separate short agreement signed once you accept a specific Host Company. It confirms the final pricing model, payment schedule, and placement details.
    J-1 Intern vs. Trainee
Intern: current student or recent graduate (within 12 months), up to 12 months. Trainee: degree plus 1 year of related experience, OR 5 years of related work experience, up to 12 months (18 months in hospitality).

    Money & Refunds

    Is the $99/month option refundable?

The $99/month option lets you start without paying $199 upfront. It activates your file, covers your eligibility review, profile prep, and matching. Monthly payments are non-refundable. If you want a refundable option, pick the one-time $199 Application Fee.

Is the one-time $199 Application Fee refundable?

Yes, the $199 is refundable in two cases: (1) we can't place you within the matching period, or (2) you review or interview for a proposed placement and decide not to accept it. We do not force candidates to accept any placement. You always get to review the role, location, stipend, housing situation, and program details before deciding.

When is the $199 Application Fee NOT refundable?

The $199 is not refundable if the non-placement is your fault: withdrawing before the matching period ends, not responding to messages, missing interviews, not providing required documents, giving inaccurate or incomplete information, becoming ineligible, or changing your availability or plans in a way that prevents matching. We just ask you to stay responsive, honest, and engaged during the process.

Does paying the application fee guarantee an interview or job offer?

No. The application fee does not guarantee a specific interview, employer, location, or offer. We prepare and present your profile to suitable host employers. The host companies decide who they want to interview based on their current openings and training needs.

Why is the application fee $500 in some fields?

Hospitality and culinary is where GCB's host network is deepest, so matching is fastest and the application fee is $199. Outside those two fields we are sourcing a host employer from a smaller pool, often company by company, and the DS-7002 training plan takes more work to build. That is why the application fee in the other designated occupational fields is $500, with a 4-month matching window instead of 3, and a full refund if we do not match you.

Is the $500 application fee refundable?

Yes, in full, if we do not match you with a host company within 4 months. It is not refunded if the non-placement is your fault: withdrawing early, not responding, missing interviews, not providing documents, or giving inaccurate information. Unlike the $199 one-time fee, the $500 is a single payment with no monthly alternative.

    Matching & Choice

    How long does matching take?

Up to 3 months from when your profile is complete and active. Some candidates match faster. Timing depends on your background, English level, availability, preferred location, program length, department, and current host company needs. Longer programs (6 to 12 months) are usually easier to match.

Can I choose the host company or location?

You share your preferences and we factor them in. This is not a job board where you pick from a list of open positions. Host employers review profiles and decide who they want to interview. Before accepting anything, you review the role, location, stipend, housing situation, program duration, and pricing.

Am I forced to accept a placement?

No. You are never forced. If a host company is interested, you interview first. If they make an offer, you review the full details before deciding. You only move forward to the sponsor and visa stage after you accept a host offer in writing.

    How early should I apply?

3 to 6 months before your targeted start date. The full path from application to U.S. arrival typically takes 3 to 5 months depending on host-match speed, embassy availability, and visa processing.

    Eligibility & Logistics

    Can non-EU candidates apply?

Yes. Being transparent: the J-1 visa process can be more difficult and less predictable from countries outside the EU, UK, Switzerland, Canada, and Australia. The final visa decision is always made by the U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

What if I previously stayed, studied, trained, or worked in the U.S.?

Tell us if you have been in the U.S. before on any visa (J-1 Summer Work and Travel, J-1 Internship, J-1 Trainee, F-1, H-2B, B1/B2, or any other). Previous U.S. history can affect your eligibility, timing, and sponsor review.

    Is housing included?

Housing depends on the host employer and location. Some employers arrange housing, some provide guidance, some require you to find your own. Housing cost, deposits, transportation, and payroll deductions are confirmed in the host offer where available.

How much money should I bring for arrival costs?

Bring enough personal funds to cover your first few weeks before the first paycheck: housing deposit, first rent payment, meals, local transportation, uniform items if required, and personal expenses. The exact amount depends on location and host employer.
    Start for $99
